Past, Present & Future

Lady Butlin Unveling Our New Facilities at St. John's Sport & Recreation Centre
Jersey Gymnastics Club (formerly Grouville Gym Club) was formed in 1976 at the request of the Sports Leisure & Recreation Committee (now ESC) to run recreational gymnastics classes for as broad a range of children as possible from our Island schools.  The first class was run at Grouville School, hence the Club's original name. Over 30 years later in 2007 we successfully and proudly moved into our new St. John's 'headquarters' unveiled by Lady Butlin (right). To reflect our Island wide operation and our move to St. John's Sports & Recreation Centre, the Club changed its name to "Jersey Gymnastics Club". We have high aspirations for the future and now train in arguably the best gymnastics facilities in the Channel Islands.

The numbers of gymnasts and coaches in the Club has increased year on year and today we offer classes at five primary schools around the Island as well as at St. John's where we also hold all our squad training. We have a total membership of around 250 aged 4-18 yrs and a squad membership of around 60 who train up to 15 hours per week. We have 16 fully qualified Club Coaches and 9 Assistant Coaches – many of whom are ex-gymnasts who have come through the Club.

The Club is non-profit making and its aims are: Jersey Gymnastics Club has over many years provided an environment for hundreds of young children and teenagers to benefit from sport on a regular basis and at a low cost. The club has a proven track record and, despite many years of having no dedicated facilities or competition experience, has produced a number of very talented gymnasts. Many medals have been won at Island Games with perhaps the most successful year being in 2003 in Guernsey when Ben Frith won 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze; Matthew Maletroit won 2 Silvers and James Evans 1 Bronze. Nicola Booth also won 1 Bronze for the women's team. With our move to St. John's we hope to improve significantly on our past successes, as our vision of a first class dedicated gymnastics facility is becoming more of a reality. The perceived benefits of such a facility are: Our dedicated use of the Hall at St. John's runs from April to September and during the winter months we share the facilities with other users and sports. Our aim for the future is to secure such dedicated facilities all year round which would be a huge boost for gymnastics in the Island.
